Bank Mergers and the Meaning of Market Scale
A merger can create the largest bank under one measure and not another, so every scale claim needs a market and denominator.
Bank-merger coverage often compresses several different rankings into one word: largest. The ranking can refer to domestic assets, customer loans, deposits, branches, market value, or customers. Each can be correct while describing a different competitive position.
This page is a new measurement guide. It does not reproduce the former report about CaixaBank and Bankia.
Fix the unit and perimeter
Start with the legal and accounting perimeter. A consolidated banking group can include foreign subsidiaries, insurance operations, and other businesses. A domestic-market comparison can exclude some of those activities.
Record whether the number is:
- total group assets;
- domestic customer loans;
- domestic deposits;
- risk-weighted assets;
- branches or customers; or
- equity market value.
Then state the reporting date and whether the figure is pro forma or reported after completion.
Measure concentration separately
Creating the largest bank does not by itself show that competition disappeared. Competition analysis needs a defined product and geographic market. Household deposits, mortgages, small-business credit, payments, and corporate lending can have different competitors.
A simple concentration ratio can show the share held by the largest firms. A Herfindahl-Hirschman Index uses the squared shares of all firms in the defined market. Both measures depend on the chosen denominator and should not be presented without it.
Separate size from resilience
Larger balance sheets can support diversification and investment in technology. Integration can also create execution risk, overlapping exposures, operational concentration, and institutions that are harder to resolve during distress.
Capital ratios, liquidity measures, asset quality, funding mix, and profitability answer different questions from asset size. A merger headline should not use one as a proxy for all the others.
The European Central Bank Data Portal and supervised-bank publications provide common reference points. Company filings supply transaction-specific definitions. For a reliable comparison, reconcile the two before ranking the combined institution.
Write the narrow conclusion
State the exact measure: “largest domestic lender by customer loans at the stated reporting date” is testable. “Largest creditor” is not, unless the article defines the market, data source, and denominator.
